Launching The BORN Collaborative: Empowering User Voices in the BORN Information System (BIS)
“Our data partners are innovative and knowledgeable in their field of work, making them invaluable additions to inform our work at BORN.” ~Mélanie Daboud – Regional Coordinator and BORN Collaborative Lead
At BORN, we believe communication is more than a simple exchange of messages. We communicate to create relationships, form diverse alliances, engage with others to create communities and co-create meaning.1 With this in mind, BORN launched the BORN Collaborative in 2023.
What is the BORN Collaborative and Why is it Important?
The BORN Collaborative is a community of individuals who use the BORN Information System (BIS) and are passionate about using perinatal data to improve care for birthing people and newborns. The Collaborative includes a diverse group of data contributors - from nurses and midwives to clinical educators, managers, administrative staff, and clinical informatics specialists.
We identified the following areas of interest:
- Clinical informatics
- Electronic Healthy Babies Healthy Children (eHBHC)
- Enhancements to the BORN Information System
- Health equity, diversity, and inclusion
- Information quality
- Midwifery Invoice System
- Midwifery-specific care and data
- Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) data
- Perinatal care and data
- Reporting (including clinical reports, the Maternal Newborn and NICU dashboards)
The BORN Collaborative forum helps BORN and the Collaborative develop a shared understanding of the real-world experiences, challenges, and evolving needs of BIS users (recognizing various social, cultural, and physical contexts).
How has the BORN Collaborative Shaped the Work we do?
In 2023, members of the BORN Collaborative provided input and recommendations (i.e. though email and online surveys) re: the following initiatives:
- Designing a solution to reduce data entry burden
- Modernizing the Midwifery Invoice System (MIS)
- Creating a NICU ventilation report
- Reviewing the 2024 BIS Perinatal Enhancements educational materials
Looking Ahead
In 2024, nearly 90 individuals volunteered to be part of the BORN Collaborative - evidencing the dedication and eagerness of this community. The group boasts a diverse range of skills and expertise. We look forward to the insights, ideas, and solutions that will be cultivated through the BORN Collaborative community.
