What is the BIS?

The BIS is a secure database that collects, manages, protects, and shares critical data about every pregnancy, birth, and child in Ontario.

Data Sources

Explore the sources behind BORN Ontario’s data. Data is sourced from birthing hospitals, midwifery practice groups, Expanded Midwifery Care Models (EMCM), birthing centres, fertility clinics, prenatal and newborn screening laboratories, follow-up clinics, clinical programs, and primary care organizations.

Privacy

BORN Ontario is a prescribed registry under the Personal Health Information Protection Act, 2004 (PHIPA). We take pride in being a trusted steward of personal health information. Learn more about how BORN protects your privacy

Who Uses the Data?

BIS data supports quality improvement and better care across Ontario. For example, hospitals and midwifery practice groups use their own clinical data to guide quality initiatives. External partners across the province use BIS data to improve care for Ontario families, including:

    • Ministry of Health 
    • Regional Networks
    • Researchers
    • Policy-makers
