Results and Next Steps

How your screening results are reported will depend on what type of screening you decided to have.

How to expect your results

  • If you had enhanced first trimester screening (eFTS) or maternal serum screening (MSS), your results will be reported as a screen positive or a screen negative
  • If you had non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT), your results will be reported as high risk or low risk

Screening limitations

Regardless of which type of screening test you have, it is important to understand that screening tests are not diagnostic and cannot tell you if your baby has or does not have a specific condition with 100% certainty.

Other testing options

The only way to know for sure if your baby has one of these conditions is to consider having invasive diagnostic testing (such as chorionic villus sampling or amniocentesis).

Consider using our resources to help understand what your screening results mean.
