BORN Quality Week: Impact of Promoting Single-Embryo Transfer
Multiple gestation pregnancies are associated with an increased risk of perinatal and neonatal complications. This is especially relevant for Ontarians who become pregnant through Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART). The Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society, as well as the Ontario Fertility Program, have been championing the practice of single-embryo transfer for many years. Limiting transfer to a single embryo reduces the occurrence of multiple gestation pregnancies, and therefore reduces the risk-related complications.
Is this advocacy making a difference? Yes - BORN data show a significant decrease in the multiple pregnancy rate (for all in vitro fertilization treatment cycles) between 2013 and 2021

Prenatal Screening Ontario: Data Drives Quality Care

Prenatal Screening Ontario (PSO) plays a vital role in supporting informed decision-making and improving care for pregnant individuals across the province. By collecting and analyzing data on prenatal screening outcomes, PSO helps healthcare providers and families understand how well screening tests perform and how services can be optimized. This data-driven approach not only enhances clinical practice but also informs policy changes—ensuring that prenatal screening in Ontario remains safe, effective, and responsive to the needs of the population.
