Ontario Midwives Can Now Order Publicly Funded NIPT
Prenatal Screening Ontario is announcing a significant enhancement in prenatal care.
Starting December 19, 2025, changes to the Laboratory Specimen Collection Centre Licensing Act (LSCCLA) allow midwives in Ontario to order publicly funded Non-invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) for pregnant individuals who meet Category I criteria.
This policy shift improves access and continuity of care by removing the need for physician referrals. Midwives can now offer the full range of prenatal screening directly, creating a more streamlined experience for expectant families.
What is NIPT?
Non-invasive Prenatal Testing is a blood test that analyzes placental DNA. It screens for common chromosomal conditions such as trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), trisomy 18, and trisomy 13. NIPT is highly accurate and poses no risk to the pregnancy.
Why This Matters
- Easier Access: Eligible pregnant individuals can access NIPT more conveniently.
- Comprehensive Options: Midwives can now offer the full range of prenatal screening, supporting continuity of care and enhancing the client experience.
