Health System Leaders on the Promise of BORNConnect
BORNConnect is helping shape the future of pregnancy and newborn care in Ontario through the development of the Digital Ontario Perinatal Record Plus (DOPR+).
The DOPR+ will connect information from across the pregnancy journey into a single, secure, and interoperable digital record. By mobilizing health information (including sociodemographic and social determinants of health data) in real time, the DOPR+ will enhance patient and clinician experience while advancing individual, family, and system-level outcomes.
Built on secure and modern digital health standards, the DOPR+ will integrate clinical guidance, decision support, and standardized data collection to strengthen equity, consistency, and quality of care—helping shape a more connected, responsive, and intelligent system of pregnancy care in Ontario.
Health system leaders and clinicians across Ontario are already recognizing the transformative potential of the DOPR+. Below, they share why this work matters and what they see as the opportunity ahead.
A Shared Vision for Connected Care
"The potential benefits of a universally accessible electronic patient record for pregnancy and newborn care are immeasurable.
From enabling patients to "travel with their records" wherever they go, to enabling true 24/7/365 access to clinically relevant information for providers when presented with a pregnant patient needing care, to leveraging the potential to customize at the point of care based on unique clinical and socio-demographic elements of that patient's story to understanding more deeply who we are and aren't serving from a population health and equity standpoint.
There is not one dimension in which a digital OPR doesn't have the potential to improve patient care, patient experience and provider experience."
Aderemi (‘Remi) Ejiwunmi
Vice President, Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children
"An interoperable, digital medical record is a necessary evolution for the existing Ontario Perinatal Record (OPR).
First launched in 1979, the paper OPR has guided generations of clinicians to offer high-quality, guideline informed, clinical care to the pregnant people of Ontario. As clinical guidelines and care have become increasingly complex, and technologically dependent, it is critical that the Ontario healthcare system evolve the medical record designed to ensure the safe arrival of the newest members of our society.
By ensuring physicians, nurses, midwives and others in the person’s circle of care, are able to communicate and collaborate, our health system will be better equipped to support optimal care experiences and knowledge translation with, and for individuals and their trusted supporters."

"I am very excited that Ontario will finally have the fully digital perinatal record that birthing people deserve.
It will make care transitions safer and more seamless. It can reduce unnecessary duplication of services and cue health care providers to the current standards of care. It will allow the collection of health data that is essential for the understanding and improvement of perinatal care in this province.
And, most importantly, it can enhance the pregnancy experience by giving the individual patient full access to their entire perinatal record at any time from any place".
