SOGC Disappointed Budget 2025 Does Not Prioritize Women’s Health

The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) has expressed concern over the 2025 federal budget, citing a lack of targeted investment in women’s health. Despite ongoing challenges such as the closure of labour and delivery departments, long wait times for obstetric and gynecologic care, and staffing shortages across the country, the SOGC says Budget 2025 failed to include specific commitments to address these pressing issues. While the budget introduced a $5 billion Health Infrastructure Fund, the SOGC argues that this does not address the core problems affecting women’s health services, which stem more from workforce and funding deficits than infrastructure needs.

The SOGC also highlighted the absence of new funding for the national pharmacare program, which jeopardizes access to free contraception for women in provinces without existing agreements. Citing recent data from the McKinsey Health Institute, which shows Canadian women spend 24% more time in poor health than men, the SOGC emphasized that closing preventable gaps in women’s health could add up to $37 billion annually to the Canadian economy by 2040. The organization urges the federal government to prioritize women’s health, noting that investing in women is essential to Canada’s growth and prosperity.
