Multiple Marker Screening (MMS) Requisitions

Multiple marker screening (MMS) - most commonly enhanced first trimester screening (eFTS) and maternal serum  screening (MSS) - is performed in Ontario by 3 provincial MMS laboratories: Trillium Health Partners - Credit Valley Hospital, Mount Sinai Hospital and North York General Hospital.

December 17, 2021: Please note that Multiple Marker Screening is no longer performed for twin pregnancies. The requisition has not yet been amended to reflect this change.

Which MMS Requisition Should I Use?

Each of the provincial MMS laboratories has a specific catchment area. A provider can zoom in on our map to learn which MMS laboratory covers their location,  and use the corresponding MMS requisition for that laboratory.

Ordering enhanced First Trimester Screening (eFTS)

NEW RESOURCE:  "How to get enhanced First Trimester Screening" leaflet to support your discussion with pregnant individuals around the logistics of undergoing eFTS.

There are at least two requisitions needed for ordering eFTS. Depending on the facility, a general laboratory requisition may also be required.

1. Nuchal Translucency (NT) Ultrasound Requisition

An ultrasound requisition is to be completed by the ordering provider. Visit our interactive map to find facilities offering NT ultrasound in Ontario. The ordering provider can contact the ultrasound facility of interest to obtain the centre-specific ultrasound requisition.

2. Multiple Marker Screening (MMS) Requisition

  • The clinical information section of the Multiple Marker Screening (MMS) requisition is to be completed by the ordering provider.
  • The sonographer or physician who is measuring the NT completes the ultrasound information section of the MMS requisition at the time of the ultrasound.
  • The patient takes the requisition to any blood collection laboratory following the NT ultrasound.
  • While same day blood sampling is ideal, it is not essential. The blood draw can be done until approximately 13 weeks and 3 days gestation.

Ordering Maternal Serum Screening (MSS)

  • The clinical and ultrasound dating information sections on the Multiple Marker Screening (MMS) requisition are to be completed by the ordering provider prior to the bloodwork.
  • The patient takes the MMS requisition to any blood collection laboratory.

Prenatal screening results (eFTS and MSS) will be reported to the ordering provider by the MMS lab generally within 5 business days.  Please note missing information decreases the quality of the screen and can potentially delay the results
