Multiple Marker Screening (MMS)

Multiple marker screening (MMS) tests are available in the first or second trimester of pregnancy. They will give information about the risk of having a baby with trisomy 21 or trisomy 18.

Which test to consider

In Ontario, there are two options for MMS depending on how far along you are in pregnancy.

  • enhanced first trimester screening (eFTS) - available between 11-14 weeks' gestation
  • maternal serum screening (MSS) - available between 14-21 weeks' gestation

It is not necessary to have both eFTS and MSS in the same pregnancy as these tests screen for the same conditions. If a result is reported from eFTS, MSS is not needed.

How to get MMS

Your health care provider can organize this testing and will need to complete the appropriate screening requisition.

Credit Valley Hospital serum screen requisition    Mount Sinai Hospital serum screen requisition     North York General Hospital serum screen requisition

Results

The results of eFTS and MSS will typically take 7-10 days and will be sent directly to the health care provider who ordered your screening.
