As a trusted registry, BORN Ontario is leading the development and implementation of a provincial monitoring system through its Healthy Growth Initiative. BORN Ontario is partnering with primary care providers (doctors, nurse practitioners) to get accurate information on pediatric growth (height and growth) from their electronic records.

The Healthy Growth Initiative is a response to The Healthy Kids Strategy, which reports that almost one in three children in Ontario are overweight or obese. Childhood obesity can cause serious medical conditions that continue into adulthood.

The overall aim of the strategy is to reduce childhood obesity and to promote the health and well-being of children and youth in Ontario.

BORN's Healthy Growth Initiative will enable public health units, health care practitioners and policy makers to:

  • understand more about childhood growth in Ontario
  • promote and support a healthy life style for children and youth in Ontario

The Healthy Growth Initiative was created in collaboration with eHealth Ontario and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) Healthy Living Branch Child Youth Services.

A pilot project to collect behavioral data will be offered in select clinics. Hand-held tablets will allow children (or their parents) to answer questions about the child's daily habits (sleep, exercise, food, etc.).
