Data Collection

BORN is a Prescribed Registry under Ontario’s Personal Health Information Protection Act under its legacy name of the Ontario Perinatal Surveillance System (OPSS).  This status allows BORN to collect, use and disclose personal health information for purposes of facilitating or improving the provision of health care.

Data is collected from a number of sources including: 

• The Newborn Screening dataset
• The Niday Perinatal and NICU databases
• The Ontario Midwifery Program database
• The Fetal Alert Network database
• The Multiple Marker Maternal Serum Screening dataset

Data is collected through a number of mechanisms including manual data entry and automated extraction and uploading from existing hospital information systems and lab information systems.

The way in which the data is collected may change as the technology to support data collection, storage and sharing is developed as part of the BORN Build.
