The Ontario Midwifery Program’s Maternal-Newborn Health Reporting Database was established in 2003 to monitor and evaluate services by the province’s registered midwives. The database contains record level information on clinical outcomes, utilization and health human resources related to midwifery services. In addition to data on birth events, data are also collected on pre and postnatal care, breastfeeding, miscarriages and hospital (re)admissions. All registered midwives in the province submit data to the database, which ensures accountability for ministry funding and enables ongoing planning for the expansion and integration of midwifery services.
